The idea in brief

Sequential experiments allow investigators to examine accumulating evidence and decide when to stop. What counts as a valid procedure depends on the information available when those stopping decisions are made.

Epistemic aperture proposed that an institution should not give every observer the same maximal view. A blinded auditor would receive a deliberately restricted information stream that supports an exact falsification rule. A contextual investigator would see the richer circumstances needed to interpret causes and consequences.

Transparency would therefore be plural rather than total. Different apertures would be designed for different epistemic jobs, much as a camera lens controls which light reaches a detector.

Evidence is relative to permitted action

In a fixed experiment, validity is often described as a property of the data and method. Sequential settings add another ingredient: the investigator can decide what to examine next and when to stop. Those choices depend on the information available at the time. A procedure valid for one information stream may no longer have the same guarantee when an observer can condition decisions on additional context.

Epistemic Aperture treats an observer’s information and authorised actions as part of the evidential instrument. Two people can receive the same measurements yet operate under different testing conditions because one knows which cases are special, can choose among analyses, or can stop after seeing a favourable pattern.

Why a narrower view can support a cleaner test

A restricted information stream can make relevant cases behave uniformly. An auditor who does not know treatment assignments, identities or contextual labels may be unable to select the convenient subgroup or stopping time. That blindness is not a claim that context is unimportant. It is a way to keep the detection rule from adapting to information it was not designed to absorb.

The narrow aperture must be deliberately matched to the claim. Too little information makes a test weak or meaningless; too much unconstrained information expands the space of hidden choices. The design problem is to expose exactly the variables required for a discriminating test while withholding variables that would allow the test to be opportunistically redefined.

Plural apertures instead of universal transparency

A narrow detector cannot safely run an institution by itself. It may identify a departure from expectation without understanding why it occurred or what response is humane. A second role therefore needs a wider aperture: identities, histories, mechanisms, severity and surrounding conditions. The detector protects comparability; the contextual role protects judgment.

A mature institution can support several apertures at once. A blinded scientific committee evaluates outcomes, a safety committee sees treatment and patient context, local practitioners understand individual circumstances, and a public report exposes aggregate accountability. No single view is complete, but together they divide incompatible epistemic tasks.

Designing information constitutions

The concept shifts attention from data access alone to data-action pairs. For every role, designers should ask: what can this person see, what decisions may they make from it, and what guarantee depends on that limitation? Information barriers then become constitutional structures rather than ad hoc secrecy.

The broader philosophical lesson is that knowing more and testing better are not always the same operation. Context improves interpretation, while restriction can protect discrimination. Wisdom may require institutions that coordinate several partial views without pretending that maximum visibility in every role is the only form of openness.

Evidence includes a rule for looking

Evidence is often treated as a body of facts that exists independently of its observer. In sequential inquiry, that is incomplete. An auditor receives observations over time and decides, at each stage, whether to continue, stop or reject a claim. Which observations are visible at each stage changes which stopping rules are available. A stream of facts plus unrestricted freedom to choose when to evaluate it is not the same evidential object as the same stream viewed through a fixed summary.

An epistemic aperture is the rule that determines what an inquirer can distinguish while making those decisions. A narrow aperture may reveal only an aggregate or a predeclared statistic; a wide aperture may reveal individual cases, covariates and intermediate fluctuations. Wider vision supplies more knowledge, but it also supplies more opportunities to let the timing and framing of a test depend on favourable accidents.

Why sequential testing is special

If a study is evaluated once at a fixed endpoint, analysts can account for the planned statistic in advance. Sequential settings are different because evidence is inspected repeatedly. The decision to stop can itself encode information. A gambler who reports only when ahead presents a different record from one who reports after a fixed number of rounds, even if both disclose every observed outcome at the selected endpoint.

Modern sequential methods can preserve validity under many forms of optional stopping, so the lesson is not that looking often is inherently corrupting. The narrower point is that validity belongs to a combination of evidence process, information set and permitted action. When these are mismatched, a test that was exact for a coarse filtration may cease to have the claimed interpretation for an observer who can condition decisions on finer detail.

Role separation rather than collective blindness

A practical institution need not destroy information. It can distribute different apertures among roles. One team may see individual-level data to investigate safety, another may receive only predeclared aggregates to make a formal decision, and an independent custodian may retain the full record for later audit. No single view is declared universally superior; each is matched to the actions its holder is authorised to take.

This resembles blinding, but the purpose is broader than preventing expectation bias. The aperture constrains the set of adaptive strategies available during evaluation. The person empowered to stop, approve or sanction may intentionally know less than the person empowered to diagnose. The institution gains both a clean decision rule and a richer investigative record by refusing to collapse those roles.

The danger of romanticising ignorance

Less information can also conceal harm, prevent subgroup analysis and protect powerful actors from scrutiny. A coarse statistic may look stable while severe failures are concentrated in a minority. Any proposal for restricted visibility must therefore specify whose ignorance is being protected, what action it enables, who retains the omitted detail and how suppressed information can trigger an override.

The aperture should be understood as an information constitution, not a virtue of secrecy. Good design constrains strategic use of detail without erasing the detail. It separates temporary decision blindness from permanent institutional blindness and gives an independent party the ability to examine whether the coarse view omitted something morally or scientifically decisive.

Applications and limits

Possible applications include clinical monitoring, benchmark governance, grant evaluation, platform experiments and algorithm audits. An evaluator might receive a locked aggregate for a formal pass–fail decision while a safety monitor sees disaggregated cases under a different mandate. The arrangement is useful only when the decision rule and override path are specified before the results appear.

The concept does not imply that every claim becomes more testable under less information. Often richer data support strictly better tests, and formal methods can lift coarse guarantees into a finer information stream. The contribution of the aperture lens is diagnostic: it asks whether a claimed evidential guarantee quietly assumes limits on what the decision-maker could observe and do. If so, transparency policy and testing policy cannot be designed independently.

A thought experiment

In a clinical trial, an outcome committee sees treatment labels removed and applies a prespecified stopping rule. A separate safety committee sees treatment, timing and patient context. The first protects a clean test; the second can act intelligently when harm appears.

Consequences

What the idea changes

The provocative claim was that more information is not always epistemically monotonic. An institution may preserve stronger tests by preventing some knowledge from entering particular decisions.
